My Neighbor Totoro is about two sisters Satsuki and Mei who befriend a strange forest spirit named King Totoro. Mei and her sister learn that it’s Totoro’s powers that make the trees grow and the winds blow. Totoro takes a liking to the girls and leads them on a series of wild adventures through the forests.

The movie’s themes of familial bonds and courage in the face of difficult situations make it a perfect family movie. Not to mention the visual appeal of Totoro and the Catbus!

#3 Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind

Nausicaa is Miyazaki’s second feature film and a sentimental favorite of many longtime anime fans. The movie’s top-notch animation and epic themes made it a cult favorite as the genre gained international recognition in the 1980s.

The story takes place one thousand years after a near-apocalyptic war forces the last vestiges of mankind to struggle to exist on the fringes of a polluted forest inhabited by gigantic insects. Nausicaa, the princess of the Valley of the Wind, is one of the few people left that truly understands the environmental significance of the forest.

#2 Spirited Away

Spirited Away is an award winning film that tells the story of a young girl named Chihiro, who follows her parents into what appears to be an abandoned amusement park. After her mother and father are turned into pigs, Chihiro gets a job at a bathhouse for spirits, and her adventure begins.

It displays Miyazaki’s favorite themes of environmental awareness, love, and bravery and stretches your imagination. The designs of the various spirits that Chihiro encounters are some of the best things about the movie. Brilliant!

#1 Princess Mononoke

Billed as “the Star Wars of anime”, the main character in this film is male! Shocking, isn’t it? Young warrior prince Ashitaka is afflicted with a deadly curse. As he searches the forests of the west to find a cure that will save his life, Ashitaka finds himself in the middle of a battle between a group of rifle-toting ironworkers and the angry gods of the forest. Things get even more complicated when he meets the fiery Princess Mononoke, a young woman raised by wolves.

Mononoke’s epic adventure story creatively draws upon a wealth of established themes and archetypes from classic hero tales. The main theme, the beauty and sanctity of nature, is juxtaposed with rather violent and well-executed action scenes.

The English dub of Mononoke was one of the first anime feature films to attract an all-star cast of American actors, including Gillian Anderson, Billy Bob Thornton, and Jada Pinkett-Smith.

The Japanese video distributor Bandai Visual will put “Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion Kiseki no Birthday” — the

December 5 stage event that announced the “New Code Geass Project” — on Blu-ray Disc, DVD, and UMD on April 23. While 100 minutes of this home video release’s 140-minute run-time will be devoted to the live event, it will also feature the “latest footage of the ‘New Code Geass Project’” among its 40 minutes of bonus extras.

The home video release’s other bonus extras include a video-recorded version of the “picture drama” that was presented at the “Kiseki no Birthday” event. A picture drama tells a story through still pictures and dialogue on an audio track. The seven cast members who appeared at the event also recorded video comments after the event ended.

Sunrise and Bandai Visual announced at the December event and on the Code Geass anime franchise’s official websites that there will be a “rebirth” for Code Geass, and promised more information in 2010. According to producer Yoshitaka Kawaguchi, the new project will feature the simultaneous releases of comic series, music, new products under development, and visual works. The first phase of “New Code Geass Project” is Tomomasa Takuma’s tentatively titled Code Geass: Shikkoku no Renya (Code Geass: Jet-Black Renya or Code Geass: Renya of the Blackness) manga. The manga will launch this spring.

Kawaguchi said in the February issues of Newtype and Animage magazines this week that there are at least two more phases planned, but said he did not know what form or format that the next phase of the “New Code Geass Project” will take. He did say that he and director Goro Taniguchi would be interested in a stage or musical version of Code Geass. He added that he wants to announce a new animation project as part of the “New Code Geass Project” effort “soon.”

Graphic.ly’s first target is comic book fans. With Graphic.ly, comic book fans can not only access the content they want to access from multiple devices — including mobile phones and the desktop — they can also interact with other fans and with the comic creators.

Using some of Microsoft’s technologies like Windows Azure, Graphic.ly can serve content to users in multiple ways, so that content can be accessed quickly and easily. Graphic.ly is launching a private beta with the iFanboy community.

Two weeks after the private beta closes, Graphic.ly will publicly launch its beta with Windows 7. Other platforms like Adobe AIR and the iPhone will also be coming to the market soon. The idea is to ultimately print media a platform for providing digital content to users, while also creating community interaction, and making that content accessible and optimized for various digital devices.

As how we consume media changes, platforms like Graphic.ly will become important in making it easy to not only find content, but to read it in a way that fits its intended purpose and from multiple devices.
