A 14-year-old girl from the Isle of Man is jetting out to Japan on Friday, to promote her debut album which has brought her hundreds of thousands of fans.

Rebecca Flint, who goes under the name of Beckii Cruel, acquired her fan base after putting her dance act on YouTube and becoming a star.

“She’s flying out to Tokyo on Friday and is very excited about it,” a spokesman for the schoolgirl told Sky News Online. “She’ll be getting the chance to meet her fans.”

Beckii’s likely to have quite a few to meet – she has been watched by millions as she dances to Japanese pop music – J-pop – and the theme tunes of anime cartoon shows.

Anime is a type of animation in the style of the manga comics loved in Japan.

Like hundreds of thousands of students in Japan, she takes part in “cosplay” – dressing up as a favourite anime or manga character.

The characters have big eyes, small faces, big hair and slender limbs, and Rebecca in her alter ego as Beckii Cruel fits the bill perfectly.

Comic experts say Beckii is so admired because she fits the category of a “moe” idol and will be loved from afar by boys who are too awkward in real life to approach someone like her, because they are afraid of being rejected.

The daughter of a policeman and a dance instructor, Beckii’s interest in anime and manga began when she was 11 and started reading Fruits Basket, a Japanese manga series.

Beckii has already built a strong fan base. She has performed live in Tokyo and her web page is the second most subscribed among Japan’s music scene.

The album was produced by one of the country’s biggest publishers, Tokuma Japan, which has teamed Beckii up with an 18-year-old French student, known as Sara Cruel, and a 16-year-old student from Portsmouth, who takes the name of Gemma Cruel.
